MORTAR BOARD is a national honor society for college seniors. The society recognizes in its members the qualities of superior scholastic ability, outstanding leadership, and dedicated service to the University. Mortar Board membership means active involvement on campus and in the community. There are 210 chapters. At the 2003 National Conference the SDSU Cap and Gown Chapter received the Ruth Weimer Mount Award as the most outstanding chapter in the United States. The chapter also received the Project Excellence Awards for five of its projects, the Golden Torch Award for its excellence in supporting the ideals of Mortar Board, the Excellence in Advising Award, and Honorable Mention for its Web site.
Current projects include philanthropy projects related to the national focus on literacy, awarding the Emeritus Faculty and Staff Outstanding Service Award annually, hosting a faculty and staff appreciation dinner, and publishing the SDSU Daily Planner and Calendar of Events (a daily planning calendar and information booklet for the University community). Along with the Alumni Chapter, the chapter provides over $6,000 in scholarships to initiates and graduating seniors
